Take a Chance and Make a Friend
Sometimes when I sit down to write this article I’m at a loss. Other times I am inspired, perhaps something caught my attention on the radio or in the news, or possibly someone made a suggestion about a topic to discuss. As I was driving along one day, I began thinking about some new potential ideas for Bethany, and that made me feel good. I’d even say I felt inspired! Because of this, I decided to ask our Board of Directors at a recent meeting what it is about Bethany that inspires them. I found their responses to be a great reminder of who we (Bethany) are. Here are a few examples of what they said.
"I’ve had family live at Bethany and I’ve witnessed firsthand the quality of housing as well as care provided to them. It was a great place for my family to live."
"The team works well together. The staff is appreciative and energized to work at Bethany. Everyone seems to be on the same page."
"The new LED lighting, new refrigerators, and the other physical improvements all show progress and investment in the homes of our residents. And hopefully lower electric bills as well."
"Long-term and loyal staff members are inspiring. What great commitment they demonstrate."
"If you are lonely there are many opportunities to receive support and to participate in social activities. Residents have opportunities to engage with others and spend time with their friends and peers."
As we discussed this last point, about residents having the chance to socialize with others, it just so happened that the Merrivista library window was cracked open a tiny bit, and we overheard a few residents chatting and laughing together. “That, right there, that is what is inspiring,” said one of the directors. It was a great moment. Then I wondered, “without a place like Bethany where would our residents be living?” If they were still in their own single- family home or another apartment across town, would they have a neighbor of a similar age? Would they have others around that would share their interests? Would they have these same opportunities to spend time with each other? It’s possible but I think it would be less likely.
At Bethany we do provide an environment ripe to make friendships and to enjoy life together in community. The opportunities are there for residents. It may just be a matter of taking a risk, putting yourself out there, and looking for the chance to get involved. Bethany is more than just a place to live, and we can all be thankful for that. Now get out there and get involved!
“Friendship is born at that moment when one person says to another: What! You too? I thought I was the only one.” – C.S. Lewis
